Desoto Falls Hike – Round 3

The weather the last couple of days has been amazing, so I was itching to get out and do some hiking. Since the boys aren’t playing soccer right now it is the perfect time to head further up into the north Georgia mountains since we don’t have to rush back for soccer practice.

Last night when talking to the boys about going on a hike I asked them what they wanted to go see. All three of them said waterfall, even though the waterfalls aren’t as big this time of year. Desoto Falls immediately came to mind because it is a good distance at 3 miles and we get to see 2 falls. It also allows up to stop at an awesome place to get ice cream. Priorities.

We were the only people on the trail this morning and we had a great time. The boys all agreed that the falls were kinda weak, but they still had fun.

Robots!

Today the kids and I headed out to a science club meeting where they learned about robots. Thing 1 is my science kid and he was super excited for this event.

img_2528

First the boys learned some background information about robots and watched a couple of demonstrations. However, the most exciting part was actually making “robots.”  Now, according to the information we learned, what they made were not technically robots, but they were super cool anyway. The first one was small.

The second “robot” was a draw bot. Basically, it scribbles when the motor is on. They were most impressed by these.

Oh, and of course Thing 4 hung out and watched all the excitement.

Of course, after we finished with the learning, it was time to play.

{Field Trip} : William Harris Homestead

Last Friday the kiddos and I headed out on an awesome field trip full of history.  Thing 1 loves history so this field trip was right up his ally.

img_2301

William Harris Homestead is a local homestead that has been around since 1825. The same family still owns it today.

img_2241

First the kids learned some Civil War history and saw many of the things that an infantryman in the southern army would have carried with them into war. I will say that the boys realized how lucky they are to only carry a few things when we go hiking.

img_2257

We then moved to the original log cabin. It was interesting to learn that it took them 4 years to make the house by hand. The boys were also glad that there were only 4 of them and not 11 kids in our family.

img_2263

img_2264

After that we learned about how they stored food and what they used for medicine.

Next the boys learned about what chores they had to do on the homestead. They were very thankful that they did not have to stay up for 6 days to make sure all the meat was smoked.

img_2300

Lastly, we learned about clothing and bathing. The boys weren’t so sure about bathing only once a week. Honestly, I was glad to hear that they thought bathing only once a week was kinda gross. Maybe there is hope for the boys yet.

We ended with a hay ride.

Animal Tracks & Scat

Today the boys and I had an interesting adventure. We learned about animal tracks and scat. The boys thought it was cool that they got to talk about poop without me yelling at them.

At one point they were asking for the different name for poop. Thankfully, Thing 2 decided to use a filter before yelling out the four letter word that he thought about.

We also enjoyed a short hike with a small waterfall. The waterfall was small since we haven’t had much rain lately.

Park Play

On Thursday the kiddos and I headed to a local park for some play time with some friends. Thing 4 had a great time exploring. Her brothers had a great time playing with and making new friends.

Georgia Mountain Falconry

On Thursday afternoon the boys went on a field trip to learn about falconry. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this field trip. I knew their would be birds or raptors, but past that I wasn’t sure what we were going to learn about.

Well it wasn’t long before I found myself learning exactly what falconry is. I didn’t realize that people used the bird to hunt. It was actually very interesting to learn how they go about acquiring, training and hunting with the birds. I learned just as much as the boys.

At one point they had a bird flying across the room. When it was in the back of the room where I was hanging out with Thing 4, the bird looked over at Thing 4 like she was something it wanted to hunt.

Marietta Aviation Wing Tour

On Tuesday the kiddos and I headed off on our first field trip of the week. We enjoyed a guided tour by a former Lockheed Martin employee and a Vietnam veteran.

The boys thought it was really cool to see so many old planes.

However their favorite part was seeing the different guns and shells that were used on several of the different planes during combat. Oh and they also liked the drone.

When the guide was talking to our group about the F-14 Tomcat, he mentioned the movie Top Gun. Of course, my boys heard movie and wanted to watch it. So over Tuesday and Wednesday nights the boys watched Top Gun for the first time.

Amethyst Mine Digging

Today the whole family, even Daddy Cameron, went on a field trip to an amethyst mine.

DSC_3552

Digging for amethyst is not something I ever thought I would spend a day in my life doing, but it was a neat experience. Something that the boys will never forget.

DSC_3535

We were not as lucky as some people, however, we did manage to find a few small pieces of amethyst and numerous pieces of quartz.

DSC_3551

Despite the nearly 100 degree heat, the boys had a great time. I think they were just most excited about using the rock picks to hit the rocks.

Thing 4 tried to stay cool in the shade and cheered us on. She also was able to hang out with her brothers when they needed a break.

LEGO Boats

Thing 1 has been begging to start the LEGO group back up. So today, for the first time in a long time, we had some friends over to play with LEGO.

DSC_3177

Todays theme was to build a boat. Then we took them outside to float in the pool. Once we determined which ones would float, we had them add pennies to see how much weight their boat could hold.

Thing 3’s boat was able to hold the most weight.

DSC_3171

Thing 1’s boat was probably the coolest.

DSC_3175

Thing 2 said his boat was built for speed.
